Sexton attended Maryville High School. Later, he enrolled at Everett High School where he played football. Subsequently, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education.

He also finished an Associate of Arts degree from Hiawassee College and completed his Masters of Religious Education and a Doctorate of Ministry. Additionally, Sexton has also received his Doctorate of Divinity and a Doctorate of Humanities.

When Sexton was fourteen, he started attending the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Tennessee. After a youth choir practice, the director, Don Brakebill, asked him if he was a Christian. Realizing that Sexton was lost, Mr. Brakebill took him to meet the pastor. A short time later, Dr. J. William Harbin led him to trust Christ as his own personal Saviour.

While at Everett High School, the principal Robert Davis promised to help Sexton’s mother with his education. He was a godly Christian man who kept his promise and prayed for Sexton. Sexton met his wife Evelyn in high school after their wedding they attended Forest Hills Baptist Church, and God began a powerful work in Clarence’s heart.

Pastor Hagan gave Sexton the opportunity to preach on his radio broadcast. Later, Sexton preached his first message to a congregation at the Oak Street Baptist Church in Maryville, Tennessee. In 1969, he became the pastor of Greenback Memorial baptist church. On August 17, 1988, Sexton became the pastor of the Temple Baptist Church.
