After carrying out research in over 20 large global companies, the author found that truly effective leaders are distinguished by a high degree of emotional intelligence. An individual can have first-class training, an incisive mind, and an endless supply of good ideas, but still, fail to be a great leader for lack of emotional intelligence.

The Emotional and Social Competency Inventory ( ESCI) is the only measure that Daniel has worked on although a number of assessment tools for emotional intelligence in the workplace claim to be associated with him. Daniel developed ESCI with his longtime colleague Richard Boyatzis who is a professor in the Weatherhead School of Business at Case Western Reserve University.
