In October 2016, Matt was held captive by Venezuelan intelligence agents on a Monday while preparing a news report concerning the dire conditions at the Central Hospital of Valencia. He along with two physicians who were helping him were moved to the government agency’s headquarters in Valencia where they remained in custody for three days. Matt was later released on Wednesday night and put on a plane back to the U.S. The two physicians were also released.
